Frequently Asked Questions

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It originated in Brazil in the early 20th century and has since gained popularity worldwide. BJJ emphasizes techniques that allow a practitioner to control and submit their opponent through various holds and positions, especially when the fight goes to the ground.

Unlike many traditional martial arts that rely on striking, BJJ teaches practitioners to use leverage, technique, and timing to overcome bigger and stronger opponents. This aspect of BJJ makes it suitable for people of all ages and sizes, as it does not solely rely on physical strength.

Do I need any prior experience in martial arts before coming to my first class?

No, you do not need any prior martial arts experience before attending your first BJJ class. BJJ is a martial art that focuses on ground fighting and grappling techniques, and many beginners start their BJJ journey without any previous training. In fact, BJJ classes are structured to accommodate students of all skill levels, from complete novices to experienced practitioners.

Is BJJ suitable for all ages, genders and fitness levels?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art for everyone, no matter their age, gender or fitness level. Unlike other martial arts that focus on striking, BJJ highlights leverage, technique, and timing. This focus allows practitioners to defeat opponents using strategy rather than strength. BJJ is welcoming to all, from kids to seniors, beginners to pros. By concentrating on grappling and ground fighting, BJJ lets individuals progress at their own pace, based on their abilities and goals. Its flexibility and adaptability make it ideal for improving fitness, learning self-defense, or enjoying a challenging martial arts experience.

What should I wear to my first class?

Gi (optional): Check if a gi is required for your class. We may have a gi you can use for your first class, as long as you wash it and bring it back next time.

Shorts/Leggings: Pick durable shorts with stretch or leggings for flexibility.

Additional Gear: Consider bringing a mouthguard and a water bottle for hydration during class.
